I have just been to see Stewart Lee at the Leicester Square Theatre.

I like laughing. I am not very good at it. But I enjoy it when it happens. Comedy is one of those times when I am in control. I don't let myself laugh. Perhaps it is because I have a rubbish laugh? I know I have a terrible sneeze. It is the same as my dad's apparently. So perhaps someone told me I have a rubbish laugh and so I seek to hide it.

I don't really have a sense of humor. At least not a constant one. But I find Stewart Lee funny. Jules does not find Stewart Lee funny. I think this might be because she was born in Walsall; they couldn't afford comedy in the Midlands back then.

But then Stewart Lee is from the West Midlands too. Although he is actually Scotch. His father was from Scotland, and as we know, Scottishness is passed on through the male gene. I was concieved in Scotland. Perhaps that is it?

Stewart Lee and I have a lot in common. We are both a smiliar age. He lives in Stoke Newington, and I have been there quite a lot.

The last part of his set was about getting older and realising that all of his anger had turned to disappointment. Weirdly enough my facebook status the other day said almost exactly the same thing.

The new show is not as funny as Stand Up Comedian, at least not in terms of gags per minute; but as a piece of theatre it is far superior. The humor is so dark that it creeps up on you out of a corner and makes you want to hide from it. Not in a Frankie Boyle way "the Queen's Vagina is haunted" but in a very subtle way.

I could not go up and speak to him afterwards because I was lost in thought. And because I didn't want to break the illusion. Stew got to be my voice for a while - middle ages, middle-class, liberal white man- and he want anarcho-punk orienteering with Napalm Death!

Instead EM and I want to Wagamamas, and talked the talk - of science and literature, candyflips, my ego issues, and her undercover black-ops on behalf of the Catholic Church.

And then I came home

By coincidence here in Ireland it was also budget day, the Finance Minister Brian Lenihan delivered a 7% cut in public expenditure to match the 7.5% fall in GDP in 2009.  To equal that Alastair Darling would need to have announced £40 billion in public expenditure cuts today.

Here are some of the reasons Guido thinks Ireland will bounce back faster than the UK:

  • Corporate and capital tax breaks for start-ups have been extended
  • Corporation tax rate of 12.5% is ‘here to stay’
  • “Green tax cuts” for zero emission vehicles
  • VAT has been reduced by ½%
  • Public services efficiencies sort
  • Welfare benefits reduced to 2006 levels, social welfare bill cut by equivalent to 1.5% of public expenditure
  • Dole allowance to be reduced to €150 a week
  • Social welfare to be cut 4.1%
  • Politicians’ pay will be reduced in line with public sector grades
  • Public sector pay cut of 5% on first €30,000 salary, 7.5% on the folllowing €40,000 of salary and 10% on next €55,000
  • Taoiseach (PM) to have pay cut by further 20% on top of previous 10%
  • Permanent pay reduction of 12% for those on over €200,000 in the public sector
  • Savings of over €1bn on public sector pay bill

Darling has gone the other way, introducing penal tax rates at the top, and hiking NI payroll taxes on people on only £20,000.  He put up VAT which as any left-winger will tell you, is regressive and hits the poorest hardest.  What struck Guido was that this is an odd class war political budget, their own core voters are being hit hardest.   Low paid, public sector workers on £20,000 get a pay freeze, a tax hike and whacked by VAT increases – a triple whammy.

Ireland welcomes UK corporations with a tax rate nearly half the UK rate and best of all, Lenihan also announced that alcohol and cigarette taxes are to be reduced…

Well, for those of you to whom I have not already explained , our dear friend Sprooce is.

Firstly - Insane
Secondly - driving from Guildford to Cameroon in a 1 Litre 1990 Fiat Uno with his friend Ulf.

He leaves on Saturday. This is the last few days of running around.
I have spent a large proportion of today trying to find someone / anyone that could add some extra protection to the underside of the car to protect fuel lines, tank, sump etc.

I have received lots of useful advice, should I ever know anyone who wants to do this again - about leaving plenty of time and how it would be done if only anyone had the time. Also a lot of people laughed. Helpful.

Then - with many thanks due to Ulfilias - I was given the number of someone called James who works in a unit just over the road that May be able to do it. Gods my fingers are crossed.

There is then the question of cost for our intrepid travellers. Bearing in mind it has to be done by Friday night at the latest. It is, of course, Wednesday evening now - and Sprooce and Ulf are not here yet. James has said he will wait at the unit until about 8pm. He seems decent. It is now 18:54. They are also not made of money and, at the moment, neither am I :-(

So I sit with a cup of tea and a cat on my lap. Waiting.

The lovely Toripink is my angel and says she will come over a bit later and will, as usual, ease my worries.

This last minute stuff is really not me. I have only been sick once with worry this evening.....

Having left off planning anything this year due to people mocking my desire to plan for all eventualities, I am planning Everything next year and on. The general confusion that is how everyone else seems to live is too tiring for me.

And breathe.

Peston is at it again, the cocky hack claims he has “confirmed” matters thus:

“It has been confirmed that the Chancellor Alistair Darling will impose a one-off super-tax on city bonuses when he unveils his Pre-Budget Report today”.

Shouldn’t the Speaker demand of the Chancellor why Peston and not parliament was the first to know of his plans? The PBR is important and may contain market sensitive information.  Peston has previous on this, causing mayhem with share prices and arguably creating a false market.  Bercow made a big thing of insisting on the primacy of parliament when he was running for office. Prove it today.

As Alastair Darling prepares to deliver a kick in the bonuses to successful bankers, pause for thought.  As the bankers eye up properties in Zug and sunnier islands the tax burden falls heavier on those left behind.  The harder you squeeze high-earners, the more will leave these shores – the tax on the many is increased by the few who leave.  That is what happens when looters try to fleece the productive too much.

Bob Diamond, head of investment bank Barclays Capital,  warned yesterday that businesses and individuals could flee the City – “both financial capital and human capital are extremely mobile”.  Tory appeasement of City bashing will continue, led by the son of a son of a son of a stockbroker they stand on the sidelines for fear of being painted as friends of the City.  Guy Hands is just one high-profile tax exile, many more are fleeing the 50% tax rate.  We already seeing human capital flight…

UPDATE : How will the plan to tax bonuses cover the hedge fund community? It won’t is Guido’s guess, they are unregulated in the most and the capital is nominally held offshore. The hedgies in St James are the ones who take home 8-figure sums. Bankers and brokers will have to re-define bonuses as ‘profit shares’ and their limited partnerships as “mutual cooperatives”…

David Cameron set to back windfall tax

Cameron@Davos2 "Conservative leader David Cameron has given his strongest signal yet that he will back a windfall tax on bankers’ bonuses as he outlined his party’s plans for the City. Cameron, speaking ahead of the government’s pre-Budget Report, also warned a Tory administration would not automatically mean an easier ride for bankers. Cameron said: “It is not necessarily true that all windfall taxes will lead to damage. I believe in normal times the most important thing about a tax system is it should be consistent. “But we don’t live in normal times. It’s not acceptable to see taxpayers’ money going into banks and to see too much of that money being paid out in bonuses.”" - City AM

Allister Heath uses his Editor's Letter in City AM to warn that "everybody will be hit by the war on banks".

The City is in my blood, says David Cameron

"David Cameron attempted the balancing act yesterday of wooing the world’s most powerful bankers while assuring Middle England that he would not give that most hated profession too easy a time. Speaking to a gathering of top financiers, the Conservative leader told them: “My father was a stockbroker, my grandfather was a stockbroker, my great-grandfather was a stockbroker.” The City, he assured them, was in his blood." - The Times

Fiscal hawk, Alan Budd, nominated by Cameron to run proposed Office for Budget Responsibility

"David Cameron on Tuesday appointed an economic hawk to oversee the Tories’ new fiscal watchdog, designed to police “pro-growth and anti-deficit” measures in an incoming Conservative government’s first emergency Budget. Sir Alan Budd, a former chief economic adviser to the Treasury and member of the monetary policy committee, would oversee the creation of the Office for Budget Responsibility, the party said." - FT

One in ten people living in Britain were born abroad

Green Damian New "The proportion of the population that is foreign-born has almost doubled in the past two decades to 11 per cent, or 6.7 million people. At the same time, almost a quarter of babies born in England and Wales had foreign mothers. This is also a record, according to the Office for National Statistics. The figures indicated that, in 2008, some 11 per cent of the population was born overseas, up from about 8 per cent in 2001 and 6.7 per cent in 1991... Damian Green, the shadow immigration minister, said: “This government has never had any control over immigration numbers. Some government insiders have said this was a deliberate plot, others claim it was just a mistake. “Either way, they have left our borders unprotected. It is one of the biggest policy failures of the Labour years."" - Telegraph

Theresa Villiers stands firm after BA launches full-blown attack on Tory policy towards third runway

VILLIERS THERESA NW "British Airways' chief executive, Willie Walsh, has rounded on the Tory party in the wake of the Committee on Climate Change report into aviation, and warned that it will make the "biggest mistake ever" if it blocks a third runway at Heathrow... Walsh's comments follow the publication today of a report by the government's advisory panel on climate change, which makes the case for a third runway by admitting that British airports can handle up to 140 million more passengers a year by 2050 without breaching emissions targets. But the shadow transport secretary, Theresa Villiers, said the Tories stood by their policy and warned that a third runway would exact a "horrendous price" on the environment." - Guardian | Times

Allison Pearson: Cameron is right and Harman is wrong on marriage

"I happen to think David Cameron is doing something that is as brave as it is unfashionable. He's saying something because he believes it's right - especially for children - not because it's what people want to hear. He's telling the men and women who are financially worse off because they're married that they are not fools to try to stick together. 'No one needs a Tory tax incentive to value their marriage,' says Harriet Harman. Perhaps not. But anything that makes marriage and long-term commitment look attractive to people has got to be worth a try." - Allison Pearson in the Daily Mail

"Searching for the causes of social breakdown, the CSJ organised a YouGov poll of 50,000 people, asking them about their family background and the problems they faced. "We found that if you don't grow up in a two-parent family you are 75% more likely to fail educationally, 70% more likely to become addicted to drugs, and 50% more likely to have an alcohol problem," Stroud says. "If we are going to be responsible about the development of social policy, we need to be allowed to go where the evidence takes us, which is that the best outcomes for children are within stable, healthy married relationships." - Guardian

This is the last post I'll make as a single woman ... hopefully. I'm not sure how I'm meant to feel. Marriage is something that is important to me but the wedding is less so. Yes I hope it all goes to plan, I hope we have fun and the occaision is marked with due reverance but I'm looking forward more to spending the rest of my life with the most wonderful man in the world, he is my confidante, my rock, the first person I woud choose to spend time with and the one person who I feel really knows me and even then he still loves me. I'm not into the idea of being another persons posession but the occaision and status is a chance for me to declare my feelings to the world and celebrate the fact that we found each other.

Wish me luck

One week and end lies between me and the run to the festive period, but even that sort of starts now.
I gave the work Christmas shindig a miss, I'm opting out of such events until I'm convinced things are better at work. The atmosphere is much improved, to the point where management appears to be listening to reason for the first time in 18 months.
Early days yet on that but the upshot is that it's not a chore at present, apart from the badly thought out holiday booking regulations which I'll be lobbying to have amended. It's introduction in the spring has meant that I can't take time off when I need it for gigs (fortunately we've been playing mostly Fridays and Saturdays) and halted my home improvement plans, those left of which require me to be present when others are doing the work.
I put some shelves up for Mog on Sunday and I'll be having my first Christmas meal with her, RV and some of their friends. That part of the menu was actually cheaper than the normal food for a change.

Tomorrow I need to do the third and final mix of the new Hackenbush recording. I put the internet mixes up a few days ago but they need tweaking and I want it done before Friday's gig at the Lion, our last of the year.
Impressed with my track recording of Wolftickets, Steve finally gave up his philosophical stance that everything has to be live for the sake of the music. Good choice. I can now mix without having to fiddle endlessly with the EQ (and destroy the top end in the process) just to be able to hear all the instruments. They just need a little tweaking, shouldn't take more than a few hours.
Our Christmas song, 'Clementine', is being packaged in a limited edition Christmas card just for family and close friends, I hope the packaging for the rest of the songs arrive in time too.

Saturday I'll want to do some more shopping, I can endure the crowds it's looking for a parking space that's getting tough. In the evening, me and half the band are going up to Leeds to see The Mars Volta, the only downside being that since I'm driving, I can't drink.
Then on Sunday I'll make a start on the present wrapping, it's a good way to discover what you've forgotten to buy - better now than later!

Early start tomorrow, bed now.

Gosh. Feministing readers will already have seen this, but I'm absolutely fascinated by this PDF from the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education, about the vagina, virginity myths and the hymen, which they call "the vaginal corona".

My gynaecological knowledge is not the best, so any medically-minded persons on my f-list want to interject?

I must admit, I could never quite get my head round the idea of what the hymen would actually look like, so the very stylised pictures, while fascinating, remind me of crosses between flowers and petri dishes. Which is kinda cool.

Twitter is awfully quiet without Nadine Dorries who is currently sans Blackberry, filming a documentary on a council estate for a week. Twitter’s traffic has dropped substantially without the regular haiku form updates. The unpopular parts of the blogosphere are almost in despair with a lack of inspiration for their delirious rage-fuelled responses everytime she opens her mouth.

Guido couldn’t help notice however Nad has been missing from other places as well, apparently the order came from the top of  Telegraph that politely requested none of the paper’s staff were to write about her ever again in their news pages. A quick peek at the Telegraph website confirms that she wasn’t mentioned for over a month, unusual for her.

Suggesting that the Barclay brothers were using the expenses scandal to undermine the British political system for a certain minority party probably didn’t help her case.

In the rush to talk tough on the deficit Alistair Darling is expected to announce an end to Labour’s limited-time-only 2.5% cut in VAT this year.  That means VAT will go back up to 17.5% or, if Darling’s feeling even more stern, to 20%. Since VAT is one of the most regressive taxes this gives the Tories a golden opportunity to shun a tax rise that hits the poorest, hardest.  The chart from the Taxpayers’ Alliance [pdf] shows that the poorest quintile pay over ¼ of their in indirect taxes, the richest only some 10%.

The Tories are refusing to rule out the same rise in VAT to 20%. That makes the Lib Dems the only party to promise substantial tax cuts with a plan to raise the income tax threshold to £10,000. If you are going to hit the low paid hardest with indirect taxes surely it makes sense to compensate them by raising the income tax threshold accordingly? Lower taxes for the low paid has got to be a vote winner.  In any event Guido has a suspicion that Darling’s PBR won’t schedule any rise until after the election…

We know Alastair Campbell oversaw the cut ‘n pasting of parts of the dodgy dossier from student essays on the internet.  Did he also get “intelligence” from a cabbie?   Tory MP Adam Holloway, a former Grenadier Guardsman who is said to have close links to spies, claims intelligence officials told him that a cabbie falsely claimed Saddam Hussein had acquired long-range missiles after listening to Iraqi commanders chatting in his taxi two years before the invasion.

In future when Gordon Brown makes wild campaign claims we would do well to remember that it is Bad Al Campbell who is sexing up his speeches…

LeftWatch: Work doesn't pay under Labour

"8 of the 12 polls published since early November have put the Tories below 40 per cent, against only one of the previous 25." - Times | Yesterday's ToryDiary

"The prospect of a Conservative landslide seems to have disappeared" - Jon Harris in The Guardian

Tory coup as George Osborne signs up Labour advisers on Whitehall efficiency

"The Conservatives signed up a series of government advisers today , including two business leaders who have led current and past public sector efficiency drives, in an attempt to steal a march on Labour in the run-up to the general election." - Guardian

One of those advisers, Bernard Gray, tells The Times why he thinks efficiencies are possible: "Over the past decade the productivity of the private sector has risen by a quarter, while in the public sector it has fallen, despite huge investment in IT and other capital expenditure designed to improve productivity."

In a leading article, The Guardian compares the similarity of the main political parties' public reform strategies.

Single mothers heckle David Cameron as he defends his pro-marriage agenda - The Sun

"David Cameron was accused of "discrimination" and "perpetuating stereotypes" by a group of single parents yesterday as he was forced to defend his party's policy of handing tax breaks to married couples. In a speech to members of the single parent charity Gingerbread – which was not advertised to the media by his aides who feared the Tory leader would face a rough ride – Mr Cameron denied being "at war" with single parents." - Independent

Polly Toynbee accuses Cameron of class war against the poor

"It is not class war or engaging in scare tactics to point out that Cameron and Osborne's only known tax plans gift £1.2bn to the top 2% of wealthiest estates in inheritance tax. Their marriage tax relief gifts 13 times more cash to the top than the bottom. Giving back extra tax relief on pensions of the richest gives £3.2bn to the top 1.5% of earners. Reversing Labour's 50p income rate gives £2.4bn back to the top 1%. The total sum taken from 98% of voters to donate to the top 2% is £11. 7bn. That really is class war – the rich looting everyone else." - Polly Toynbee in The Guardian

The outgoing Football League chairman Lord Mawhinney wants a salary cap - Guardian

Alistair Darling will announce a one-off punitive super-tax of more than 50% on the bonuses of tens of thousands of bankers - Guardian

"Opinion polls demonstrate widespread support for taxes on bankers. A ComRes survey in October found two-thirds backed a windfall tax, with only a quarter opposed. Measures to focus taxes on the rich also have broad appeal. A YouGov poll this weekend found two-thirds agreeing that “any further tax rises should be concentrated on the highly paid”, while 25 per cent said any tax rises should be spread more widely to avoid discouraging entrepreneurs. A poll on public sector pay restraint for the BBC last month found the most popular measure was a 5 per cent pay cut for the top 10 per cent of public sector earners." - FT

Scottish Tories attack Alex Salmond's choice of Christmas card

Picture 8 "Tory Whip David McLetchie said: “Alex Salmond is trying to politicise Christmas, having already attempted to politicise the Saltire, Scotland’s national days and our children’s education. His obsession with independence is blinding him to reality.”" - Herald | BBC

Green hypocrisy

"If there really is just a fortnight left before we are all doomed, it is good to see that the 20,000 or so delegates are going out in style. More than 1,200 limousines have flooded into the Danish capital (forget about public transport). According to this newspaper's Copenhagen diarist, "most of these stretched vehicles have been driven hundreds of miles from Germany and Sweden. Last week France ordered an extra 42 of them. Only five of the limos are hybrid; the rest are petrol and diesel." - Dominic Lawson in The Independent

And finally... Cameron the comedian

The Daily Mail quotes David Cameron talking to 1,300 members of the Lord's Taverners charity Christmas lunch: "I asked Tiger to come along, but somehow the idea of 1,300 men didn't seem to be very appealing to him  -  although he did express a keen interest in my all-women shortlists."
